Functional Specifications are used for scaling a site after its launch. The document is written from a user's point of view and is meant to outline how the site works and how each element functions within its context. This document covers the functionality from feedback rules, interface elements and navigation controls to detailed descriptions and illustrations of functionality for each screen.

Design specifications include details about the design of the site so that it can be updated easily and with consistency. This part of the document covers information about fonts (faces, sizes and colors), size and placement of graphics elements, compression schemes and template layout.
